았/었: The Past Tense Marker

았/었 are the essential past tense endings in Korean, used to indicate that an action happened or a state existed in the past. They transform present tense verbs into past tense.

Think of them as Korean's version of "-ed" in English - they take verbs from "I eat" to "I ate", or from "I go" to "I went".
